When Punishment Replaces Conversation

By Maria Sarina

One of our Lived Experience Counsellors' Stories

For many years in my marriage, I noticed a pattern: whenever something went wrong or hurt occurred, the response was never conversation or connection — it was punishment, rage, and withdrawal. I never knew what had happened, how to fix it, or even if it was safe to bring up my feelings.

A Small Moment That Made the Pattern Clear

A couple of years ago, a small event highlighted this clearly. A family friend thanked me for offering to babysit their children. I casually asked my husband, "Oh, did you forget to tell me something?" That tiny question triggered unprecedented rage — yelling, screaming, aggression. When I calmly tried to explain my perspective, his rage escalated. Weeks later, he refused to communicate, and ultimately, he ended the marriage temporarily.

The Real Harm of This Pattern

This isn't about blaming anyone outside our relationship. It's about a pattern of behaviour that causes real harm: isolation, fear, lack of closure, and emotional uncertainty. It leaves partners feeling powerless and anxious, and children witnessing these patterns can be deeply affected.

What You Can Do

The lesson I've learned is that you cannot force connection or understanding on someone who defaults to punishment. What you can do is protect yourself, model healthy communication, and set clear boundaries.

I share this through a lived experience lens — not to condemn, but to help others understand and navigate similar patterns. The hardest thing in the world is to travel through these dynamics alone.

You Don't Have to Navigate This Alone

If you or someone you know struggles with communication, conflict, or managing situations like this, counselling support is available to help people navigate these patterns safely and effectively.

It's always my hope that those who struggle reach out for help and reflect on their behaviour. But healing and accountability often require professional guidance and self-awareness — especially when surrounded by people who cushion the blow or reinterpret events for them.
